Who We Are
Our Mission
The Senior Connection of Montgomery County, Inc. provides services and programs that enhance the health and wellbeing of seniors in our community.
Our History
Senior Connection was created in January 2003 through a merger of two long-standing community nonprofits – The Seniors’ Interfaith Resource Center (SIRC) and the Allied Silver Spring Interfaith Services for Seniors Today (ASSISST). The merger allowed the two organizations to better serve the greater Montgomery County, Maryland area by providing free, escorted and “through the door” transportation services to senior residents in the county.
In December 2010, Senior Connection took over the Red Cross’ Montgomery County Shoppers Program and added our PantryFillers program to our list of services. Volunteers either escort seniors to the grocery store and provide in-store shopping assistance or personally shop for them and help with putting the groceries away upon returning. This program is means-tested based on income and age.
In 2021, Senior Connection expanded its list of services to include programs that go beyond the fundamental services we provided for much of our history. These programs include an exciting outdoor excursion program wherein, using one of several Senior Connection buses, we take seniors on day trips and to local experiences and community events. We also provide access to, or host, health and wellness initiatives that aim to enhance the educational, physical, and artistic lives of seniors in our community.
Even as our services and programs have expanded, our mission has remained constant. Whether through one-on-one transportation assistance, or inclusion in larger social outings, since 2003, Senior Connection has been the largest provider of free, accompanied transportation services in the Montgomery County. Over the last 20 years, we have provided more than 300,000 free services to over 8,500 senior adults in the region, with the help from more than 1,800 community volunteers.
