Special Focus: Latino-Hispanic Outreach Program

The number of Latino-Hispanic residents in Montgomery County has increased 80% since 1990! These 100,000 residents represent 11.5% of the population. The number and percentage of senior Latino-Hispanics have also dramatically increased. Yetlie Kern Hispanic-Latino Outreach Coordinator While some of the seniors are former immigrant workers, a larger number include parents and grandparents of current workers. Disproportionately poor, these older residents are further challenged because many have limited English language capabilities. The need to support this group has been well documented by Montgomery County government and GROWS (Grass Roots Organization for the Well-being of Seniors). We also know that the potential for mobilizing Spanish-speaking volunteers is significant.

In 2005 The Senior Connection expanded our Faith in Action program to include more Spanish-speaking care receivers and caregivers. We hope to provide access to needed services for Spanish-speaking older adults so they can remain in their own communities.

This initiative is supported from our general operating budget and through grants from The United Way's Community Foundation and the Senior Aide program managed by the Jewish Council of Agencies. It is being coordinated by Ms. Yetlie Kern.
