Evaluation 2010Vision

Older adults living as independently as possible in Montgomery County.

History

The Senior Connection of Montgomery County, Inc. was formed as the result of a merger in 2003 of the former Allied Silver Spring Interfaith Services for Seniors Today (ASSISST) and the Seniors’ Interfaith Resource Center (SIRC) volunteer caregiving programs originally funded by the Faith in Action movement of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Building on the successful track record of both parent organizations, The Senior Connection continues as a stand-alone Faith in Action Program of the Faith in Action National Network.

Values

Seniors: Seniors in Montgomery County are valued as an integral part of our community.
Collaboration: Every sector (government, congregations, businesses, other non-profits, individuals) has a unique and vital role to play in helping older adults live independently.
Volunteerism/Civic Engagement: Volunteer service invigorates the life of our community.

Mission

The Senior Connection provides mobility by linking older adults to services and resources so they can live as independently as possible and remain integral members of our community.

Statement of Need

Community Need – Since the senior population is projected to nearly double between 2000 and 2030, Montgomery County Executive Mr. Leggett convened department directors to focus on how the county government, in partnership with private providers and the faith community, can promote vital aging. He established the Senior Sub-cabinet on Vital Aging and directed that a Senior Summit be convened in November 2008. The purpose was to identify priority issues affecting the senior population, develop strategies and action plans to meet current and future needs, and take the first steps towards developing collaborative relationships between County departments and community stakeholders to ensure that Montgomery County is a good place for older adults to live and retire. Four of the eight topic areas fall within The Senior Connection’s mission and service areas.

  1. Health and Wellness – Without reliable and free transportation to the medical appointments provided by our volunteers, many seniors will not get the medical attention they need.
  2. Home and Community Support – Our mission is to provide this and we have a successful track record of doing so since 1993.
  3. Civic and Social Engagement – This is very applicable, since all of our services are provided by volunteers.
  4. Transportation – The Senior Connection is the major provider of affordable, reliable escorted transportation in Montgomery County.
